4th of July

E-mail Print PDF

If you have a name like "Liberty", you can't just sit around and let July the 4th pass you by.  And Liberty United Methodist certainly doesn't just sit around.  This Independence Day saw another crowd in Liberty's Colley Pavillion enjoying a picnic of hamburgers and hot dogs, iced tea and lemonade, and desserts galore.  (I particularly enjoyed the macarrons; thanks to whoever made them!)  With a nice breeze most of the time, most the crowd sat back under the shade of big pine trees and were serendaed by songsters Wally Bradfield and Blake Durham. Some threw footballs or otherwise exercised in the 100-degree sun, but all had a great time.

Thak you, Liberty UMC!

QHS Seniors Honored with Breakfast

E-mail Print PDF

Continuing a tradition started in 1974, FUMC honored over 70 graduating seniors from Quitman High School with breakfast on June 4. the morning before their graduation. Ben Kerr, who initiated that tradition, was a featured speaker at the event, along with community leader Troy Robinson, who attended the 1974 breakfast.

Congrats, Seniors!

"Founder", Ben Kerr

Among that crowd of smiling faces were six of our own graduates - and thirteen who had come through our pre-school years ago.

"Charter member", Troy Robinson

13 graduates - and former FUMC pre-schoolers

Thank you to all of our volunteers who made that memorable morning happen for those deserving students - and congratulations graduating seniors!  (Click here for more pictures.)

J.O.Y. Hall Progress Report

E-mail Print PDF

Sometimes waiting is the hardest part.  And we've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting...  Dotting all the I's and crossing the T's has taken weeks longer than we aniticpated, due largely to our need to track down and consolidate information on property purchases the church has made over the years.  But the wait to get started is almost over.

Closing on our construction loan is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18. The oversight and contract review subcommittees will meet that same day to review contracts, and, hopefully, sign them.  Assuming all that goes well, preparations for construction should become visible within the next week.  Look for a fence being moved, some construction materials being delivered, and the Fellowship Hall's A/C unit being temporarily relocated.

The wait isn't over - but we are soooo close! What a J.O.Y. this will be!

Capital Campaign News

On Sunday, September 28th, we GATHERED as a congregation under the big top and celebrated "Building to Serve...Together" as well as this church's 140th Birthday.  Over 200 attended.  We Are the Church was performed by the children's and adult choirs, and the sermon was given by special guest, Nick Sholars, our District Superintendent.   Prior to the benediction, those attending were invited to come forward and place their Capital Campaign Commitments at the foot of the cross.  Votive candles were lit as the pledges were presented, and we concluded the service singing Happy Birthday to FUMC while the children blew out the candles.  A BBQ sack lunch and birthday cake were served following worship, and, before the crowd dispersed, we joyfully celebrated the $507,782 pledged that day.  These pledges over the next three years, with our current building fund, bring us to a total of $725,238 to be applied to our expected project cost of $836, 197.  The day was a gift from above, and the excitement for J.O.Y. Hall is in our midst!

A Church Conference has been called for Sunday, October 19, following the 11am service to consider the final recommendations and financial package for J.O.Y. Hall. Buy calling this conference, every member of the congregation can vote on this project.  Please make plans to attend this important meeting as - well as the anticipated ground-breaking for J.O.Y. Hall on Sunday, November 9.  More details to come on this event!

J.O.Y. Hall Groundbreaking

E-mail Print PDF

Sunday, November 9th, was another spectacular day for this church.  Members outlined the foundation-to-be for J.O.Y. Hall as Rev. Ken Archer led as all in a celebration of what we will soon see growing on that hallowed ground.  Harriett Bevil - who brought us "J.O.Y'", Rev. Archer, Lay Leader Kay Robinson, and Chairman of Trustees Chuck Davis turned the first four spadefuls of soil as we ceremoniously broke ground for this exciting, hope-full project. Then the children dug in, and the dirt began to fly!

A few details remain in planning for J.O.Y. Hall, and a date will be announced for construction to begin as soon as those items are resolved.  Expect to see work to begin in the December time frame.

Thank you, Sharon and team, for all of your hard work so far - and for a beautiful and meaningful groundbreaking ceremony.
